I recently had the misfortune to suffer a minor heart attack and after an angiogram, was found unsuitable to have stents inserted. There was just too many of them.

The result a quadruple bypass and I’m healthy and fighting fit again.

However the lesson learnt in South Africa is firstly make sure you are on a medical aid and a scheme that suits your profile. Going into retirement we need all to be concerned about firstly the cost of a medical aid scheme and secondly how we intend funding any shortfalls - and there will be shortfalls.

All this is likely to seriously affect your capital at retirement and I am suggesting to clients that whilst they are currently still in employment, to start building a fund for

medical needs in retirement. If this is not necessary then great - the funds can be utilised to supplement your existing retirement provision.

Remember that at this Life Stage you need to prioritise for Wealth Creation and Protection and Medical Aid. If this has not been done a large unforeseen event could wipe out your retirement savings.
